8th Grade Scholarship Applications!!

It is our pleasure to inform you of the many scholarship opportunities available for our graduating 8th grade students to both recognize their achievements and also help motivate these students to continue their post-secondary education.

If you are interested in applying for any of these scholarships, please see Mr. Lombard in the office as soon as possible. All of the scholarships listed require a completed application, and several also need to include one or as many as two written recommendations from a Bayside staff member. Students will need to request these recommendations as early as possible in order to meet the scholarship application deadline.

Completed scholarship applications - including written recommendations - are due to Mr. Lombard by Thursday, May 1st. Remember, our Spring Intersession is Monday, April 7th through Friday, April 25th.

Student Spotlight: Matthew Cheng

This week we feature Matthew Cheng for his science fair project titled "Rust or Shine?" Matthew's project focused on finding the best household liquid that would remove rust from corroded pennies.

The genesis of Matthew's project stems from his keen interest in coin collecting. He says, "A main factor in determining a coin's value is the coin's condition. As a coin collector, you don't want to clean coins, because they are best left in their natural condition. However, it did make me think about the shininess of coins and what cleaning materials available at home would remove the dullness and rust."   Matthew picked 5 different household materials and found out that ketchup was the best at removing corrosion. He hypothesized that lemon juice would be the best with its low pH. When Matthew measured the pH levels of ketchup and lemon juice, he found them to be similar.

For consistency, Matthew used only post-1982 pennies, which are made of copper coated zinc. Copper is a widely used metal. Next time you need to clean something made of copper, consider using ketchup!

Matthew's project won 1stplace in the 6th grade Materials Science category at the San Mateo County STEM Fair. This qualifies Matthew to attend the CA State Science Fair in Los Angeles on April 28-29.

ABSENCES AND TRUANCY

Absences and Truancy

Parents please remember any pupil who is absent from school without valid excuse three full days is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor and receive a truancy letter.  A second letter will be sent after five unexcused absences and after 10 unexcused absences a SARB (School Attendance Review Board) meeting will be set up the district office.

Tardy Arrivals

Students are tardy at the 8:02 bell; please make sure your pupil is here before that time.  Any student tardy will receive a warning call home and then a half hour detention for every tardy after that call.  If you find that traffic backup on Kehoe is slowing punctual arrival, please consider parking your car 2-3 blocks away and walk you student into the school.  It's faster! It's healthier!

Zeros

Please check School Loop to keep track of current grades and zeros for your pupils.

Ausencias y absentismo
